Carol Wilson
1953 - 2007
Carol was called to Higher Service in May 2007.
Carol began her Scouting with the 150th in late 1985, having volunteered to start our first Beaver Colony due to open in early 1986. She became the first Beaver Leader and her middle son, David, became one of the first Beavers. Carol's background, in youth work and education, combined well with her personality to ensure that the Beaver Colony was a great success.
In 1994, Carol became GSL and, over the next 13 years, brought a stability to the Group with her appointment. Once established, Carol (along with her husband Mick) brought the outstanding matter of a new HQ to a conclusion. She took on the project and, after years of fundraising, the new HQ opened in 2000 and has been much appreciated by all.
Carol's achievements were recognised by others around and above her and, in 2004, she was justly awarded the Medal of Merit for outstanding services to Scouting. Subsequently, Carol's guidance helped six of her ex-Beavers (by this time Explorers) to gain their Queen's Scout Award. this doubled the number of Queen's Scout Awards earned by members of the 150th from six to twelve overnight!
Carol always wanted to run a 'BIG' camp and, in September 2005, the Group's 80th Anniversary Camp gave her the chance to realise this ambition. She was Camp Leader of the largest ever recorded camp at 150th with 85 young people and 15 leaders/helpers attending. The campe was a great success and enjoyed by everyone.
During her last months, Carol was unable to be around the Group as much, but continued to take a keen interest and attended major events whenever she could.
The founder of Scouting, Baden Powell, suggested a simple question could be asked to assess your effect on events and what you had achieved... "Did you leave things better than you found them?" Carol certainly did and, as she was laid to rest, the huge turnout proved this beyond doubt.
